Nightbook - How It Works
YOUR GROUP SUBMITS A GROUP CONTACT FORM
The Nightbook coordinator is constantly seeking groups to cover week-long commitments of evening/overnight shifts (5pm-9am the next day). The coordinator works closely with our tech team to program the call forwarding to your group members on their assigned dates.
YOUR NUMBER IS NOT VISIBLE TO THE CALLER
Callers dial the hotline number (516-292-3040) and the calls are automatically forwarded by our tech committee to the number you provided to the Nightbook coordinator.
SHIFT HOURS
Unless otherwise arranged/specified by the Nightbook Coordinator, your shift is from 5PM until 9AM the next morning.
BEFORE YOUR SHIFT
Check your outgoing voicemail greeting on the phone you’ll be using — if it includes your phone number or last name, you may wish to change it, since if you don’t answer a call quickly enough, the caller will be sent to your voicemail where they can hear your number.
STARTING YOUR SHIFT
There’s no need for you to do anything except be ready for calls to come in! If you want to “test” the call forwarding, call the hotline from another number. The number you provided should ring.
ANSWERING A CALL
Calls via the hotline will usually appear on your phone as a number you don’t recognize. Most volunteers answer by saying something like “Nassau Intergroup” or “Hi, you’ve reached the Nassau Intergroup Hotline – how can I help you?”
STAY IN YOUR LANE
We share information about AA, and we may share some of our personal experience. We avoid sharing opinions on outside issues, including other organizations or fellowships. We stick to our primary purpose of helping those with a drinking problem.
IF YOU DROP A CALL
Let the caller call YOU back, so you don’t disclose your personal number on their caller ID.
KEEP THE LINE OPEN
If you get the sense a caller just wants to chat and it’s late at night, it’s up to you if you want to fellowship for a bit. You can always let them know other people may need to get through, and offer to take their number for a call back the next day from an A.A. member.
ENDING YOUR SHIFT
The Nightbook Coordinator or another volunteer will “take the phones back” at 9am the next morning. You don’t have to do anything for this to happen. If for some reason you receive a hotline call after 9am, please handle the call if you can, and then immediately reach out to the Nightbook Coordinator afterwards to get the phones rolled back.
